Newspapers in the United States, using yellow journalism to increase their readership, accused the Spanish of destroying the ship. "Remember the Maine! To hell with Spain!" became a catchphrase that inspired action. The events leading up to the war were expedited by the Maine explosion, even if it was not a direct cause.
