Tramp Art Shelf with 6-Drawers, Porcelain Knobs, and Hooks
Tramp art is a distinct folk craft made from the 1870s through the 1940s in both the United States and Europe, often comprised of chip-carved V-shaped notches in small pieces of scrap wood layered together to make decorative objects. Items were typically made of cheap or discarded items such as old wooden cigar boxes and shipping crates.
The term "tramp art" is a misleading term which was coined much later in the mid-20th century. It presumed these objects to be made exclusively by transient or houseless wanderers ("tramps"). In reality, the meticulous work was mostly done by everyday working-class people, including laborers, farmers, factory workers, and immigrants during their spare time or periods of unemployment.
Anyone doing manual labor to earn their living would have understood the need for sturdy and equally stunning wall storage! Something that would make the daily ritual of coming and going from the home a bit more elevated. With this piece we get a wide shelf, with 6 small drawers, and an attached lower rack with 6 coat hooks, every edge of which vibrates with projecting and receding chevrons. Woods of various origin were unified by one hand and a dark mahogany stain. Though worn by time and the very nature of its material, the rustic charm of this piece has only grown in appeal. Tramp art stands in direct opposition to a world ever-filled with machines as a perfectly imperfect handicraft.
