Attributed to Portland’s own Povey Brothers Studio, this window is a vibrantly Victorian visual vanguard!
Popular motifs of Povey windows included grape clusters, roses, lilies, birds, and their signature dogwood blossom. They frequently incorporated small, thickly cut, faceted pieces of glass in rich colors, often referred to as "jewels". Their work included various glass textures, such as crackle, rippled, and granite-textured glass, which added depth and visual interest. The Povey firm was the sole stained glass establishment in the Pacific Northwest for many years, establishing a strong local legacy - earning the nickname of “the West-Coast’s Tiffany“.
A geometric groundwork of flowing florals, made up by sparkling jewels, bevels, and wave-like textured glass, make this composition an absolute stunner as well as a perfect example of the studio’s oeuvre.
Though large, the glass does not rattle - the panel and its saddle bars are firmly secured in a contemporary frame.
*Minor cracks (as shown in last photo) are present but stable. In excellent condition given its age.
