In order to capture expansive vistas, panoramic photography of the 1840s to 1900s pieced together several plates. Later, long, single-negative, wide-view photos were generated by specialist cameras that used the "swing-lens" technique which spun the lens while the film stayed motionless. This photograph is a perfect example of this later swing-lens method.
Phillips Exeter Academy, an independent coed school in Exeter, New Hampshire, was founded in 1781, and is the sixth-oldest residential school in America. It still operates to this day, where an estimated 1,100 boarding and day students in grades 9–12, as well as postgraduate students, prepares students for college and beyond. This scene, which appears to show the graduating class of 1912, is about 130 years closer to today than it is to the schools founding!
The frame’s wood shows signs of wear mostly at each corner, the condition of the photo and its glass are in good overall condition. Current hanging hardware includes two screw eyes connected by a piece of twisted wire.
