F. Claude, a painter of Paris street life in the 1960s, crafted this great modern scene of the art stalls lining the banks of the Seine. The view was probably a familiar one to the artist, whose angular brushwork and hits of bright color dominate the scene. The greys of the barren winter trees draw a perspective line to the looming ghostlike apparition of Notre Dame in the back corner of the scene. A minimalist frame encloses the canvas, which has its original 3 franc price tag – presumably from a stall just like those on the canvas.
