Mid-1800s Overshot Coverlet
Overshot coverlets are American bed coverings from the 18th to the early 20th century that include a variety of designs, often featuring traditional familial symbols, made by a thick, colored wool yarn "shooting over" a base of plain cotton or linen. Early on, most were woven on a hand loom while later weaving innovations allowed more intricate motifs done by machine.
This cotton and wool woven textile is comprised of pheasants, bees, florals, and various other organic and geometric designs. Seems to be made with a combination of machine and hand methods. It is jacquard, meaning the reverse side of the blanket is the inverse of the pattern and coloring of the front.
*Wear is consistent of age and use - possessing some loose strands of thread in areas (highlighted in last 2 photos). Otherwise, it is soft, clean, and in good overall condition.
