Mallory Wheeler "Arabic" Door Knob and Plate Set
The Alhambra, built around the 13th century in the last muslim state of Al-Andalus, Granada, found new admiration in the mid- to late-1800s as folks like British architect Owen Jones and American author Washington Irving brought the splendors of its design and history to a western audience.
The designs on these door plates and knobs by Mallory Wheeler are attributed to these studies by Owen Jones. The symbols ornamenting the knobs and plates are certainly abstracted in service of aesthetic ornamentation, as they are not fully legible Arabic characters, but this design is still referred to as the “Arabic” design by hardware company Mallory Wheeler. This knob is known as K-21400 by the Antique Doorknob Collectors of America.
Please note one door plate is warped as shown in photos.
