Hardware Cabinet with Hemacite Knobs
A whopping 224 drawers coming right up for all your bits and bobs! This beautiful multi drawer is a marvel to look at and perfect for screws, nails, and small tools you wish to house away. All the drawers are made of metal with a wooden front panel lending to its durability over time. The wood has been stained and finished many times over the years, giving it that “alligator” texture antique lovers seek out. As an added bonus it is fit with casters so it moves easily.
Have you noticed the knobs? They look at a distance to be a classic cast iron but they are actually Hemacite! What in the heck is that you ask? Hemacite is a truly inventive and resourceful material Victorians used before plastic that was made of blood and saw dust! The local butchers had an excess of blood that they were (at least in England) no longer able to dump into the sewers for a slew of reasons, so they were on the hunt for a way to use it. Local lumber mills had acres dedicated to excess saw dust throughout the country that also needed a use, thus Hemacite was born. The knobs on this cabinet date it to pre-1910 when the use of celluloid for Bakelite took favor in manufacturing.
*PLEASE NOTE* There 12 knobs missing from 12 drawers. In order to maintain the historic integrity of the piece we have not replaced them with substitutes. If purchased, we can assist in finding knobs if desired.
