Glass etching, or "French embossing", is a popular technique developed during the mid-1800s that is still widely used in both residential and commercial spaces today. Glass etching comprises the techniques of creating art on the surface of glass by applying acidic, caustic, or abrasive substances. The removal of micro amounts of glass causes the characteristic rough surface and translucent quality of frosted glass.
This 19th-century door is a Victorian example of the variety of stenciled designs that could be obtained. Cartouches, flourishes, foliage, and geometric shapes come together to both create something for the eye to look at while also screening off the other side from view. Though this door is on the shorter side, its 3” thick solid wood frame makes it substantial. Original hardware such as hinges, strike plate, and rebated door bolt included, that and the half lap edge opposite to the hinge side eludes to it once being one of a double door set.
Plate glass has a slight waviness to it, and wood has minor nicks and scratches, but piece is in good overall condition given its age.
