The beautifully scalloped pull on this type of till conceals a clever little secret. Hidden under its curve is a secret lever, which must be pushed up in order to activate a small latch in the drawer. If a rogue bandit attempts to pull open the cash drawer too quickly and too roughly, they will find it locked shut!
When the drawer is opened properly and the drawer opened far enough, an additional mechanism in the back of the drawer activates the scrolling of the paper till and rings a bell. Smart, simple, sweet, to make the work of a busy shopkeep a bit easier.
This shop till has its glass, original brass hardware, the original receipt paper, and most of its parts, but seems to be missing a spring which keeps the tension to activate the bell strike. We even have the key to the lock which keeps the hinged lid closed, but unfortunately the strike for the lock on the lid has lost its catch through wear over the years. A few small repairs by a careful hand would be quick to restore this beauty to its function, but it looks just as lovely as a display piece in any kind of general store or shop.
