Dutch Girl, Dog, and Cart Batchelder Tile
Rectangular format tile marked Batchelder Los Angeles, featuring a landscape including a classic windmill and a young Dutch girl walking alongside a dog pulling a cart to market. Glazed in a pale blue engobe process, common for Ernest Batchelder’s early designs, this tile was covered in thin colored clay slip and then the excess wiped away, to allow the tiles to have a soft, natural look as though carved from stone.
Tile# 105
From the 1923 Batchelder Los Angeles Tile Catalog:
“Our MATERIAL is appropriate for interior and exterior enrichment. It is used for mantels, pavements, fountains, counters, storefronts, in fact, it is suitable for any place where a fired clay product mav be properly specified. Our product is hand wrought by processes developed in our own factory. The body is an encaustic, non-vitreous material; the color is a mineral slip fired into the surface at high temperatures in such way that it becomes an integral part of the body, presenting a surface texture free from gloss and with the mottled surface characteristic of Batchelder Tiles. The surface of the material presents color schemes luminous and mellow in character, somewhat akin to the quality of a piece of old tapestry. Textures are pleasing to the hand as well as to the eye, free from disagreeable high lights.”
