What is now celebrated as an authentic American art form which mixes dazzling geometric abstraction and repetition with humble materials was not too long ago nearly entirely neglected and forgotten. “Tramp Art” as the name implies, lacked the upper class refinement of Victorian-styled furnishings and decor, and was not made by highly trained craftsmen but was instead made from scraps of old cigar boxes and crates, chip carved painstakingly with humble pocket knives by farmers, laborers, and even prisoners. Perhaps in our current times of mass manufacturing and characterless homogeneity the appeal of Tramp Art is its handmade and idiosyncratic nature. This example has alternating geometric shapes and is painted a deep red brown. It does not currently feature any hanging hardware.
