Universal New Old Stock 18-in-1 German Scissors with Stanhope Lens of Salem MA

$295.00

A secret image of Salem, Massachusetts, printed in France, inlaid into a pair of scissors made in Solingen, Germany, makes these 18-in-1 multitool scissors a 3-in-1 piece of history!

Original patent for these scissors dates to the late 1800s, but they continued to be manufactured and sold for several decades into the 1900s. These scissors are in original unused condition, only unwrapped to identify the microscopic image and for photography. Each pair comes with a leather sheath, the original wax paper wrapping, and an illustrated guide to the 18 uses of the scissors. These may vary in modern usefulness, but the scissors are certainly well crafted regardless! The described 18 functions in the informational paper which accompanies these scissors are as follows:

Scissors

Buttonhole Scissors

Gaspipe Tong

Cigar Cutter

Wire Cutter

Ruler

Measure

Nail File

Screw Driver

Box Opener

Cartridge Extractor

Happer

Penknife

Glass Cutter

Glass Breaker

Marking Wheel

Erasing Knife

"Stereoscope" (actually a Stanhope Lens)

A Stanhope Lens is a little cylinder of glass that has a microscopic photograph printed on one side, with a magnifying lens on the other, smaller than a single peppercorn. This one features historic landmarks of Salem Massachusetts and can be seen by holding the convex glass lens in the handle up to one eye and looking through it towards a bright light source. Best attempts were made to photograph for the purposes of this listing, but the image appears more clear and crisp in real life!

Scissors are completely unused, but have some rust and oxidation from many decades of being stored in their packaging. If you plan to restore and clean, be careful with the glass lens in the handle!

Please inquire for additional condition images or to select leather sleeve color.
