This is an Arcade Crystal No. 3 wall-mounted coffee grinder was made by the Arcade Manufacturing Co. of Freeport, Illinois. The company, founded in in 1885, initially built a reputation for cast-iron hardware, small household machinery. Arcade began producing coffee mills early on, introducing the "Crystal" line in the late 1880s to 1890s. The transparent glass hopper was a novelty that allowed users to watch the beans feed into the grinder. Later variations, like the iconic Arcade Crystal No. 3 and No. 4, were released into the early 20th century (circa 1910–1920s). These models featured an adjustable thumb screw for grind settings and a small glass catch cup held by a spring mechanism at the bottom. Arcade continued manufacturing these cast-iron grinders until the 1930s. The company shifted focus and was eventually purchased in 1946 by the Rockwell Manufacturing Company, which ended production of the original Arcade household line.
Embossed glass hopper marked "Crystal and No.3" in a classic script-style font is in clean and chipless condition with jar lid securing tightly. Cast Iron body also marked with “Arcade Crystal“ is ornately embellished with Eastlake designs of leafy scrolls and various geometric patterning. Original wooden crank handle is in beautiful condition, its grain softened by the hands of many coffee lovers throughout the ages. Grinder and spring mechanisms work as intended. Glass cup for catching the grinds is not original, but does fit well and is included. Piece has been mounted to a wooden plaque, not original but also included.
