Randy Penner (1921-2002) attended Wichita State University and Bethel College to earn a bachelor’s in fine arts. He was first a commercial artist, working as an illustrator from printing, calendar, and aviation companies, then later worked entirely in fine arts, specializing in watercolors. He was a former president (1985-87) and active member of the Midwest Watercolor Society and American Society of Aviation Artists, and had served in Civilian Public Service camps in La Pine, Oregon and Bowie, Maryland from 1942 to 1945.
This painting acts a snapshot of Penner’s oeuvre. As the title suggests, "Showers on the Oregon Coast" captures the essence of a particular landscape through the lens of an adept watercolorist. Matte and frame nicely compliment the scene. And as a surprise bonus, upon remounting the art with acid-free tape, we discovered that the artist recycled the paper of another artwork on the reverse-side, so it is a 2 for 1 deal!
