The Diebold Bahmann Safe Company was Founded in 1859 in Cincinnati, Ohio by German immigrant Charles Diebold. The company produced solely safes and vaults for many years and eventually became renowned for their sturdy products after 878 (100%) of them survived the Great Chicago Fire of October 8, 1871.
With this amazing proof of Diebold’s products durability, they were contracted by Wells Fargo in San Francisco to create the largest vault in history up to that point. To get it out west, it took forty-seven railroad cars to tow the immense weight of the vault.
This particular vault door dates back to a 1910s PNW bank building. That structure was demolished but the vault was saved and placed in a 1930s municipal building. Now, the vault has been saved yet again for your next project. Antique bank vault doors make for wildly imaginative wine cellar or speakeasy doors, you decide its fate!
We do have the combination and it is functional. Currently, we have the main piece remove in the turn style so it remains unlocked for demonstration purposes.
